Love

Love

Love is a beautiful thing. One of Merriam Webster’s definitions of love is this: “unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another.” As an intransitive verb it is “to feel affection or experience desire.” As a transitive verb it is “to hold dear” or “to like or desire actively.” However we define it, 1 John 4:7 says that love originates from and has its origins in God. The greek word for “of” in this verse is “Ek,” which means originates from or has its origins in. All Love originates from and comes from God.

The love that comes from God is unconditional and it is perfect. The only way to see love in its true form is to see it in God. In the world there is a love that is not truly love. The thing we call love in the world is not actually truly love. It is our interpretation or wrong idea of it. It wavers and can change based on the performance of a person or state of a thing. The love for a person, in regards to the false love that is in the world, can change and diminish based on the performance of that person. This is called slavery because the person being loved must perform to earn it. The love that God has is beautiful and perfect. It is unconditional and does not change based on the performance of the person being loved.

God loves you not based on whether you are lovable but because He is love. God has an unconditional love for all people.
It also says that he who loves knows God. This is referring to an experiential knowledge. God’s love can be and should be experienced and should not just be a factual or head knowledge. If you have a knowledge of God’s love, you have experienced the love that God has for you. We should ask God to experience his love.

What does love look like? Love “suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;  bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NKJV).

It is important to know that God is love and if you have been born again, you have a spirit of love. You’ve been given a spirit of love according to 2 Timothy 1:7.
